How to Use This Blog

A Wayfarer is a person who is traveling through......life, a particular place, a circumstance, a stage of life, etc. Let's walk the road of adoption together. The journey is so much better with company!
---------------------------------
Much of this information is useful for any adoption, but this blog is designed to be a
RESOURCE BLOG for ETHIOPIAN ADOPTION.
I hope this blog will be helpful to you in your adoption whether you are considering, waiting or home. I started this blog when we were adopting and found there was next to nothing on the web in any orderly manner. I set about to collect information for myself and then for others. Now, there are more sites for resources, but still not much that brings it all together. I hope this blog will serve as a sort of clearing house for Ethiopian Adoption Information. Please feel free to contribute your knowledge through commenting.
---------------------------
You can search by topic in three ways. 1. Go to the "key word" tabs on top and open pages of links in those topics. 2. Use the "labels list" in the side bar or 3. use the "search bar" above the labels list. You can also browse the blog by month and year in the Posts section or in any of the above as well. The sidebar links are to sites outside of this blog. While I feel they provide good information, I can not vouch for each site with an approval rating. Use your own discernment for each. If you have more to add to the topic, please add it in the comment section of that page or post.
----------------------------------
And, please link to The Wayfarer Adoption Blog by putting my button on
your blog so others can use this resource too. Please link to this blog when ever you can and whenever you re-post things (or images) you have found here. Thanks!
The solid tabs are links to my other blogs for books and family. Check them out if you are interested.
Welcome to the journey!

Photos to send to your child

Photo books are a question everyone of us have to consider at some point in this process. What do we send? A lot of it depends on what your agency allows, so find out first. Second, you will need to determine what is appropriate for the age and ability of your child. Remember that kids in orphanages tend to be younger in some respects and older in others. They have not likely had experience with toys and photos. This makes them on the younger scale here.

There are a lot of cool options for kids of all ages.
For a child over the age of 5 you could:
  1. Send a paper album like one you make on Snapfish or Photobucket and that sort of online photo storing and crafting site. A good binding is important because of use. Spiral bound pages may tear out more easily.
  2. You can make your own on Publisher or some such program, or use a digital scrapbook tool. You can take the file on a disk or zip/thumb drive to a printer and have it printed. Usually these are spiral bound but could be done as individual pages and put into a book with plastic sleeves.
  3. You could make one your self in an actual album with slip in sleeves or creative memory style. I would strongly suggest using page protectors and taping the tops shut for retention.
  4. Laminate the photos with your words on the back of each photo, use fun paper. Put them on a ring and lanyard so your child can carry his or her new family with them everywhere.  Use wallet sized photos. You can have any photo printed in that size.
This is a photo of our son wearing his laminated photos on a ring on a lanyard.

For the toddler/preschool set you could:
  1. Use any of the ideas from the baby set, all would be very appropriate, other than the cube which would turn into a ball. The Sesame Street albums linked at the end of the post are a cute idea for this age group.
  2. The laminated photo idea from above.
  3. I would suggest not using paper for this age group. Preschool maybe, but certainly not toddler.
For babies, there are TONS of great ideas out there.
  1. The laminated idea from above NO lanyard. I would choose a plastic ring.
  2. You could even put the laminated photos into another album that is fabric or soft plastic.
  3. You can make a fabric photo book. Or you can buy one. Amazon has tons of cute ones available. See links at end of post.
  4. Vtech has a talking album that is super cool. If you are allowed this it is awesome. It lets your child learn your voice too. http://www.vtechkids.com/product/detail/1784/Record-and-Learn-Photo-Album
  5. Fabric photo cube. This is cute and good for a baby or very young toddler. It does not require page turning and can be held. However, it is stuffed. Stuffed things are often discouraged and removed because they harbor germs, bacteria and bugs. They are hard to wash and dry adequately by hand. Check with the care center first before sending this otherwise very cool photo idea.

Here are some links for some of the soft photo books on Amazon (I am sure other places have them too!) Most of them hold 4-6 photos behind a plastic cover.

This one holds 20-36 photos and is a better idea for preschoolers or older toddlers as the interior pages are just the slip in plastic sleeves. Super cute!!!! Sesame street friends, photo to the right.

Adoption photography

From time to time I am contacted by persons who want to link or advertise with The Wayfarer. Many of them have nothing to do with adoption or Ethiopia. Some are spam. Others, like this one, prove to be very quality and worthwhile. Take a look at her web site and I think you will be impressed, as I was, by the simple beauty of her photography. So, I now introduce Pink Flower Photography, adoption package.
 ________________________________________
Adoption photography is an area I am deeply passionate about.  Since I was young, living and traveling overseas working with children has been something I have been constantly pursuing.  Previously living in Africa for a short time has allowed me the experience of third world countries, working with various cultures, teaching children in the schools, and of course photographing lives.
This year I have the privilege of introducing adoption photography as an option for families. This photography package allows you to fully be in the moment while I am working behind the scenes capturing every aspect. While I am able to travel with you for the entirety of the trip, I am there not just to photograph but assist you with your new child overseas and the entire trip home.
When the trip is completed you will received a disk with all your hand edited images ready to be printed and shared.
I am excited to be part of your journey and would love to work with you.  If you are interested in more information please feel free to visit my website (pinkflowerphotography.com) or email me (info@pinkflowerphotography.com ).

Blessings,
Caitlyn Hofmaster

Heritage dolls

I want to let you know about some super cute dolls that would make a great addition to your child's collection. Boys and girls can enjoy this handmade heritage doll.

Here is a note from Lynda about A Doll's Heart.

Lynda is a mom to 5 great kids. She and her husband adopted thier youngest back in 06 and are currently trying to bring home 1 more. During the wait for thier precious bundle to arrive she decided to start making these rag dolls that portray an adoptive child's birth country. The dolls represent 7 different countries. Each doll has her/his flag colors embordiered on its heart and it's clothes are also made to reflect their countries heritage. Proceeds from the dolls are used to bless orphaned and underpriviledged children around the world. The dolls make a great keepsake for your child's homecoming or adoption day, birthday gift, a gift for your child's first caretaker, or as a hard to find cultural doll for your child just to play with.
Here's our website: www.adollsheart.blogspot.com  Thanks for looking!

Collector dolls with Ethiopian Heritage Makeda and Saba

Another note on a doll.
American Girl had a series of dolls called Girls of Many Lands. In that collection was a doll named Saba. She came with the book by the same name by Jane Kurtz. If you can find one she would be a great doll for your collection. Not a doll to play with but one to represent heritage.
Madam Alexander has partnered to create a wonderful Ethiopian collector doll. Makeda, the Queen of Sheba, is avaliable for purchase from EthiDolls and other merchants carrying the EthiDolls. This doll company was started up by Ethiopian women who hope to give the gift of embracing their heritage to children of Ethiopian heritage. They have now expanded and a Ghanian doll has been released. It is great to see this happening.
You can see and buy her here:

Grace Center in Bahir Dar, buy a doll help a mom

It has come to my attention that some really cute rag dolls can be bought from the single moms from the Grace Center in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.
You can get more information about the center at these two sites:
http://graceforethiopia.org/WP/
http://mamameheret.com/

This is a wonderful organization which helps single moms care for and keep their children. They get job training and skills and other educational opportunities.  It is certainly worth checking out.
You can currently buy the doll from ACASA. I understand that you can buy the doll directly from Grace For Ethiopia.
Here is the doll.
ACASA also has these dolls (below) listed for sale but I do not know if they are from the same center or another. I love them. You can buy ones somewhat similar but not as cute on this site. DollsnBears. This site has a section on dolls with African heritage. It is a good resource, but mostly decorative or collector dolls.

Helping your child transition to English

Well, I have wanted to do a post on language for a while. I have finally gotten around to it.

When our boys came home they were 3. At three a child knows a lot of language and ours were HIGHLY verbal, and one quite verbose. K used complex language of a child much older (age was correct) and N used a sort of "country bumpkin" sort of speech, very cute to those who could understand it (at the guest house and drivers, etc.). They would both look to us and chatter on about whatever or ask for what they needed, in Amharic. We learned fast some key phrases to say and hear.

*Here are some of the things we did to communicate while in transition (in ET and for about 2 weeks home):
  1. picture cards/with Amharic phrases and words written on them so we could show them the picture say the Amharic and English word.
  2. We also used a phrase and word list see this post: http://jkdcolorado.blogspot.com/2009/04/amharic-word-list-for-communication.html
*Once we were home we continued with these practices and added some other things. Because the boys were so verbal, I knew they could transfer to a higher level of English than I expected. So, I did ELL/ESL games with them for the basics: Colors and familiar items. (2 weeks home to about 3 months home)
  1. We played a lot of memory games to use words items they were likely familiar with and learn the new word.
  2. We read those baby books that have one picture on a page with a word. Trucks, Animals, Toys, Food, Etc.... I would say books with only one picture on a page are the very best, not confusing. There was lots of snuggle time with that too, and so it was fun for all of us.
  3. Using deliberate speech. Please give mommy the blue cup on the table. Please put your white socks in the dirty laundry basket. Go get your red dog from your room. The more descriptive and intentional the language the better the learning.
  4. loads of play time and reading time.
  5. Talking about everything with descriptive language. I got tired of talking.
*Then as they got a bit more familiar I introduced letters and numbers. Thees are some of the things I used that worked best In addition to the games and books mentioned above: (three months home to about 1 year home).
  1. Leap Frog videos, games and toys (keep to the Preschool variety at first)
  2. Picture flash cards for numbers and letters (play games with these)
  3. picture dominoes (basic items like fruits or colors)
  4. number dot dominoes
  5. singing kids songs, especially ones with actions
  6. finger games and hand play rhymes and songs
  7. seek and find
  8. 20 questions, I'm thinking of a ____________ (give category)
  9. First Word cards (these have pictures and are great not just for reading but for what is this thing called).
  10. matching games and sorting games
* Some other suggestions I have heard from parents and what they liked are:
  1. Language Wizard series
  2. Cool Cards (picture cards for learning items)
  3. brain games
  4. facial expressions cards to learn feeling words (this is a useful thing to work on, whatever method you use to teach it).
You can find many of these things at any regular game section or school supply section at Target or Walmart. You can also find them at specialty stores like those stores where Grandma buys gifts. A great place to find everything is at a teacher supply store.  I even found some great things at Ross, TJ Maxx and Marshalls. You may even have luck in the education section of Toys R Us, they have a great selection of Leap Frog.

Here are some online resources, check out Preschool, Early Child Development, creative play, readiness skills, language arts, language:

http://www.eschoolcrossing.com/

http://www.teachingsupplystore.com/early_childhood-c-1011125.html
http://www.cmschoolsupply.com/

Remember it is NOT how much your child knows but how much your child knows you love him or her. In our culture it is easy to get caught up in how much your kid knows but it all comes......... no need to push. Love on him or her and they will have the confidence to learn. These suggestions are for FUN. It is important to keep perspective.

Ikea doll and a doll pattern for you to make

Some new dollies to share with you.
The first is a pattern you can download and make yourself for your children or to give away. The catch here is that you can not ever use this pattern for selling even for donations or fundraising. But, it is a cute doll. Check it out.  http://www.nonidolls.com/dollyhugs.html

Ikea has the cutest soft doll (above) for a mere $9.99. I held this doll and looked at it and it is really a nice one. I would buy it if I had anyone who remotely played with dolls anymore. They are gender neutral and could be easily for a boy or girl depending on how it is dressed. Clothes are sold as well. They come in all variety of ethnicity. I like this doll very much. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00196304/

Brighton Jewelry

I was on vacation with the family the latter part of this week for Spring Break. While out I saw a wonderful necklace for moms. So, of course I asked that fellow mom about it. You too can create your own personalized mothers charm necklace or bracelet at Brighton.  Buy the bead spacers and letter charms separately and add whatever other charms or beads you like. Choose your color and style. I think it is wonderfully creative and artistic. Check out Brighton.com here. Click on the various charms you would like to see on the list to the left.
Maybe you have a store near you. Find out here. There are actually 6 stores that carry various Brighton products here in my city! I bet there is one near you too.
Mother's Day is just around the corner. Wouldn't your kids love to get you started with one of these?!

Ok, I priced out a necklace and WOW it was expensive. If you go this route you may want to do a little at a time. I am now looking into a local bead shop to see if I can make a look alike on my own!

____________________________________
And, just FYI..... I post all these great products here with no strings attached. I am not asked to do so and I get nothing out of it. :)  It is just for you that I post these great products. Have fun!

Bakah's Bags a great product for a purpose

You have got to see these CUTE bags. I asked Bekah to write up something about them to post here. These would make great gifts, bags for music, that reading or art that goes in the car on long trips, a bag for a kid's quiet activity for church, school, meetings, etc. So many uses and giving to a good cause too.  She also has onsies with animals on them. If you are interested in a different country shape she can do a special order for you too. I saw she did on of Bolivia, which is so cool to me because we used to live there. So, here it is! Bekah's Bags........

_____________________________________________
I originally began making these bags to sell to fund a mission trip to Guatemala last summer. (read about it where we went here http://forsuchasthese.blogspot.com/search/label/guatemala ) I loved it so much, that I decided I want to go back, so I am making bags to help raise money again!

The Africa on these bags are all hand sewn on. I can either sew on just the outline of the Africa (like on the black bag) or use a fabric that matches the lining (like on the brown & pink bag)
"Great seller and bag! I love it. Very well made and pretty. Looking forward to using it. My daughter loves it, too."

"[My daughter] said she uses the bag I bought all the time! She loves it!"

"We own THREE and they are VERY well made! You will NOT be disappointed if you buy one!"
I also can do custom orders. I can do different color combinations, different country/continent on front, etc.
They are $20 plus $2.50 shipping!

You can buy the bags and see more examples here: http://forsuchasthese.blogspot.com/p/bekahs-bags-for-sale.html

BFC Ink. dolls

A little smaller a 12 " doll is also available at various retailers. I know I saw them at Walmart. And you can buy them online too. I found them on Amazon, etc.
The BFC Ink dolls are super cute and poseable. They have cute clothing. They are bigger than Barbie and far far more appropriate and smaller than American Girl. They have modern girl stories and are super cool and have great character. I like them. I like the cute variety better than the mature variety. I found them listed on Sears, Target, Kmart, Walmart, Kohls, Toys R Us and Amazon.

This is their own web site.

more mature Calista  Buy on Amazon 12.99

very cute Calista buy on Amazon
Target seems to have these cute ones too. Maybe more in store. K-Mart has them as well, maybe more in store.

Dolls on Clearance- Madame Alexander- Walmart

I just thought I would let you know that the 18" Madame Alexander dolls at Walmart start to go on clearance about this time of year. I saw them in the clearance at one Walmart already. At the one I regularly go to they are still in stock with all their accessories. So, this year some Walmarts may not clearance but continue to carry them as regular stock. I still don't see them on line at Walmart or anywhere else. Toys R Us has carried a variation in the past as well. I like this particular African American doll because she has curly hair and you can play with it. She is a great doll for girls of all ages and fits the clothing from American Girl. She is well made and is so much cuter than any other 18" doll out there, in my opinion. The doll runs from $20 to $40. That is quite affordable.
------------------------------
From the Madame Alexander web site:
  • Mia Bella (Toys R Us) They used to be called Favorite Friends and they can still be purchased online.
  • Doll Factory (FAO Schwarz) build your own doll!!!!!
  • Friends 4 Life (Walmart) actually now called Friends Boutique
  • Fashion Doll (Target)
  • Alexander Girlz (Costco)  not found online
  • Dolly & Me (Sears, Dillards, Kohls)
  • What-A-Doll (Kmart) mot found online
---------------------------
Each of these lines are the same 18" doll but have different clothing. They are sold only at the location they are marketed for and not available as an Alexander line with Alexander retailers. They are limited editions made for one year and replaced with a new version for the following season.

You can buy them at Walmart, Toys R Us and on line at these sites.
These Carry the Favorite Friends line:
http://www.dollcloset.com/Madame-Alexander-Favorite-Friends-18-inch-Dolls.html
http://www.matildadolls.com/favorite_friends1.htm
I also found many of them on Amazon you have to put in the full name Madame Alexander and the sub title Mia Bella, Favorite Friends, etc.

Mia Bella found on Amazon but not toys R Us online, Should have this label in stores Toys R Us. $30 aprox
Favorite Friends found on Amazon and other online stores, and Sears. $25-40

    Flash cards and communication

Communicating with your non English speaking child can be frustrating. We used a list of handy phrases in Amharic. See list here.
We also used home made picture cards to show the action or need. We included: drink, eat, potty, sleep, dress, play, sick, happy, sad, hug, etc..... we did not use them as much as we used the Amharic phrases. First we used them together, but as we learned the phrases better we did not need the cards. We wrote the Amharic phrase on the cards so that we could say it. Some families have found the cards to be really helpful. You can make them yourself with clip art or you can buy some or download them on this site.
    http://www.eslflashcards.com/

I would mention that so called universal signs and signals still need to be learned and so some cards will not be self apparent. Some will, a picture of a child drinking is self apparent. But, a picture of a toilet may not be right away. Huh???? Well, most places the toilet is a pit in the ground. :) Does not look like our toilet.  So, some orientation will be needed but happens quickly. Do try to add the Amharic or Sidamic phrases so your child understands.

These hand crafted pendants are a unique way to show your love for Africa and your support of Ethiopian Adoptions. Tess, adoptive mom,  is making these to sell because she got so many compliments on hers.  Of course as an adoptive parent you know your money goes to a good cause too.

The pewter pendant has a pressed pattern into it and a heart can be cut out anywere in Africa.  The copper one has a silver inlay that can say anything you want and in any font. This includes a heart cut out anywhere in Africa that you want.  The pewter is $15 ($10 each if you order more than 4). The copper is $15 without the silver inlay and $20 with the silver inlay($10 if you order more than 4 without silver and $15 each if you order more than 4 with silver).  My contact info is: Tess O'Day 260-609-3001.  Tessfoxx85@yahoo.com
